Wish You Could Sleep Regularly?

Everyday life can seem difficult to deal with when you are not able to sleep regularly. The needs of the body are fairly basic, but sleep is definitely one thing that we simply cannot function without. Insomnia, or the inability to get a restful sleep, happens to everyone at some point during life, but when the problem becomes an ongoing condition, the body can start to suffer some serious side effects and make everyday functioning difficult. We are going to discuss the symptoms of insomnia as well as some popular treatment methods that you can try.

Because every person’s body is different and some people need more sleep than others, insomnia cannot be diagnosed based on the number of hours a person manages to sleep throughout the night. The quality of sleep is what really determines whether or not a person has insomnia. Even a person who sleeps for nine hours a night could suffer from insomnia if they are left feeling tired or lack energy throughout the day.

A few signs that you may be suffering from insomnia include having trouble falling asleep, waking several times throughout the night, or being unable to get any sleep without the aid of “PM” medicines or sleeping pills. Upon waking, you likely feel tired and generally not rested. Mood changes may occur due to restlessness and fatigue, and you may find that you simply can’t keep you mind focused on anything. Your body may become so sluggish that you don’t physically react as quickly as you normally would. This is a particular danger when driving or handling machinery.

If these symptoms seem to ring true in your own life, then the first attempt at treatment should be to determine what is causing you to have such a restless sleep. Have you been dealing with a particularly high amount of stress lately? Worrying about money, family, work, and many of life’s other problems are very common forms of stress that hinders people from being able to sleep regularly. Exercising, watching television, eating, smoking, and even taking medication before bed are all activities that tend to stimulate the body and mind rather than relax them.

Many insomniacs have had success with activities that aid the body in relaxing before bed. You have probably heard of the age old trick of counting sheep—and have no doubt tried this out yourself in one of your more desperate moments—but it isn’t totally worthless. It has been proven that engaging your mind in “boring” or meaningless activity encourages the mind to let go of stressful or over-stimulating thoughts. Try holding a sort of spelling bee in your mind. Spell out (mentally) any words that pop into your mind. You could also try counting backwards from 100, as this is a boring task that will help slow down your mind’s stimulation.

Another great technique is to consciously force your body into a physically relaxed state. You might begin by taking deep but slow breaths. This is how our body naturally breathes while it sleeps and can help get the body into “sleep mode”. Try not to fidget or toss around too much, either. Find a position that you feel comfortable in and start the breathing exercise. Sleep experts recommend making your room as dark and as quiet as possible, as lights and sounds from stereos, televisions, and computers can encourage your mind to stay in a stimulated state.

If your insomnia issue is related to anxiety, it could be the reason you find it difficult to sleep regularly. Anxiety, in a severe state, can affect both the nighttime and daytime routine of a person and cause a total upheaval of normalcy, which usually makes the problem even worse. Professional help is available to treat anxiety in which counseling and medications are very effective.

Insomnia can be a difficult condition to deal with. If you have been struggling with sleep for a while, you may want to consider consulting your doctor to discuss the possible causes behind your condition and work out a treatment plan from there.
